Köln Hauptbahnhof / Kölner Dom

Cologne, Germany

Cologne’s main train station - Köln Hauptbahnhof - serves more than 280,000 passengers per day. To enter and leave the station, trains pass over the six-railway wide Hohenzollern Bridge, which spans the Rhine River. Both are situated next to the renowned Cologne Cathedral (seen here below the station), whose construction commenced in 1248 but was not completed until 1880.

Soldier Field

The Chicago Bears won their first home game at Soldier Field last night, beating the Minnesota Vikings 21-13. The stadium, located on Lake Michigan, is the third-smallest in the NFL with a seating capacity of 61,500.

Gasometers

Vienna, Austria

The Gasometers in Vienna, Austria originally served as massive gas tanks from 1896 to 1984. With the city's changeover from town gas to natural gas starting 1969, the tanks were no longer used and were shut down. However, the brick exterior walls were preserved and the structures were repurposed with residential (~800 apartments) and commercial (facilities include music hall, movie theater, and shopping mall) spaces at the turn of the century.

Grand Prismatic Spring

At the Grand Prismatic Spring in Yellowstone National Park, visitors can get a close-up view on a series of elevated boardwalks. The hot spring gets its vivid color from pigmented bacteria that grow around the edge of the mineral-rich water. While our Overviews typically consider human impact on the landscape, here we marvel in our fascination with the beauty of the natural world.

KaabaAl-Masjid al-Haram

Mecca, Saudi Arabia

The Kaaba is a granite, cuboid structure that stands 43 feet high. The Cube is located at the center of Masjid al-Haram, the largest mosque in the world in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. During the hajj, pilgrims gather and circle the building to pray —more than 1.4 million applied for hajj permits in 2014. Wherever they are in the world, Muslims are expected to face the Kaaba during daily prayers.

Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery

November 11th is both Armistice Day (commemorating the armistice signed to end the hostilities on the Western Front of World War One) as well as Veterans Day in the United States (honoring those who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces). Appropriately, today’s Overview shows Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery near Romagne-sous-Montfaucon, France. The cemetery contains 14,246 soldiers who died during WWI - the largest number of American military dead in Europe. More than 9 million combatants and 7 million civilians died during the conflict that ravished Europe from 1914 to today's date in 1918.

Burning Man

Black Rock City, Black Rock Desert, Nevada, USA

Burning Man is a week-long, annual event held in the Black Rock Desert of Nevada, USA. Drawing more than 65,000 participants in 2014, the event is described as an experiment in community, art, radical self-expression, and radical self-reliance. The developed part of Black Rock City, the temporary residence of the campers, is arranged as a series of concentric streets with the "Man Sculpture" and his supporting complex at the center.


 

Today marks the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. For the past two days, an installation of 8,000 glowing balloons titled ‘LICHTGRENZE‘ (meaning "border of light"), has traced an approximately 15 km long segment of the former course of the barrier that once separated the German city in two.
